TV Eye

Though Tuesday was quite a few days ago now, the PDN has finally made the big (upbeat!) announcement: PAPA TV is here. (That stands for Peninsula Area Public Access TV.) Hopefully this will be a watchful, stern PAPA. Lord knows the childish dolts ruining, er, running things in Clallam County bear some watching.

PAPA is watching you, Port Angeles...

PAPA Board members are: Edna Willadsen, Michael Gentry, Dale Wilson, Jody Potter, Wendy Wilson, Patrick McInnis, Craig Fulton, Camrin Meyer, Tyler Ahlgren and Richard Wade. (The PDN lists a Wendy Buck, and doesn't list Tyler, but I'm going by the list from PAPA's website, http://www.papaonline.tv/.)

Programming will be broadcast from the old firehouse at 215 S. Lincoln St. Here's hoping that PAPA gets some good stuff out there before the building slides down the hill. The building is so decrepit it has a market value of...nothing. Sort of like many of the people PAPA will be covering, eh?

  1. Terrifyingly, The article lists Cherie Kidd as one of the show hosts! Towards the end of the article Cherie compares the building to an elderly lady who is high maintenace, "but that's ok" - wow does she not even recognize herself in that thought?

  2. Yes, it will be interesting to see what happens. In concept, it can be one of the most amazing things to happen to the area in a very long time. If it gets decent support from the community, it can be a vehicle for pretty much anyone to convey their ideas to the rest of the community, or, via streaming, the world.

And, being "Peninsula" oriented, it sounds like PAPA is going to include community productions from Port Townsend to Forks. First time ever the community itself will be able to express itself, what's going on, and ideas for anything with other members of the Peninsula. Not the censored and twisted stories in the PDN, but hour long interviews, or on-the-spot video of what is actually happening.

The potential is exciting. And, it isn't being controlled by the same old "old guard" that have run things here, for so long.

    Best wishes to you, PAPA.

  3. Lord help us. Kidd is going to host a newsmaker/interview program.
    Already this sounds bad.

    1. LOL! I agree with you to some extent, but look how awful she carries herself at council meetings. Imagine what a fool of herself she could make if she had a show!

Best way to discredit somebody is to allow them every opportunity to be heard.

    2. It could very quickly devolve into a drinking game, watching her speak.

    3. Oh! Now you have something good! The Cherie Kidd Drinking Game. Let's see. Every time she makes a fool of herself, we do a shot? Na, we'd be under the table too quick. Every time she lies? Na, same deal. Too drunk, too quick.

Maybe when you see her pancake white make up crack? It is on pretty thick. We might get past a half hour or so before passing out.

    4. Kidd star of a drinking game, I love it. Every time she uses a word for which she doesn't know the meaning everyone has to take a drink. A half hour program is all the doctors will allow.

  4. The PAPA website is undergoing construction and updating. The newest board member is Sharon Buck. Michael Gentry is no longer on the board as he is living out of state for a year.

  5. Might I respectfully suggest a multi-part interview with the previously mentioned Yvonne Ziomkowski? There's a lady with some interesting stories to tell.

    1. Yes! Those who are now free from city hall might be willing to spill some dirt, if given the opportunity. Betsy Wharton? Maybe even Teresa Pierce might have an axe to grind and tale or two to tell. Hell, invite Max back for a weekend and get it on tape. Like this blog's supposed to do - start unearthing things. Bury the past as we try to claw our way into a sustainable future. There are lots of likely subjects!

  6. We are not actually believing what Paul Gottlieb writes, are we? Look, he couldn't even get the basic facts of who is on the Board right.

    1. I believe he engages in a "good enough" policy of journalism. Just like hand grenades and horse shoes, if it's in the basic vicinity -- close enough.

Wonder if he ever went to J-school?

  7. A good idea for PAPA is to have a wide open "Talk Show" where you have the studio open, cameras rolling, and anyone, and I mean anyone can come in and be guaranteed at least a half hour to bring to the community information they cannot get anywhere else. This can be store owners, business owners, taxi drivers, students, teachers, politicians, homeless, anyone with any comment worthy of a wider audience should be able to sound off on any topic they desire. If they want to rail against the last city council decisions, have at it. Got a beef with the Port of Port Angeles, have at it. It should be respectful and suitable for the entire family (no profanity, etc) but fully available to anyone on the peninsula who sees a need that can and should be "fixed." Make it happen PAPA. We need you.

    1. That might start out well, but then the weirdos show up and it suddenly turns into "Race and Reason".

  8. PAPA might just be the best thing that's happened here in a very long time. Anyone can apply to create a segment. But if any of the fluoride four go on, it'll have to be followed up with a scathing satire show.

General topics of interest, let's see...shows about hiking, fishing, hunting (such as it is), cycling, mushrooming, environmental issues, the importance of real leadership (had to throw that in), how sprucing up hotels can bring more tourism, how companies can set up retreats on the peninsula, the benefits of overseas logging, the future of public lands, interviews with good folks who have been run out of town, hell there won't be enough air time for it all LOL!

  9. Ironic that this comes online just after I dropped Wave for a dish/internet bundle....

  10. YouTube...the stuff will be on YouTube, and maybe they will figure out how to stream it, if they aren't total morons.

    1. The plan is not only live streaming, but publicly accessible archiving. This way, you can watch what you want, when you want, from anywhere.

It will take time to get it all together.

  11. Pretty sad that anyone is wasting money on this vision of public broadcasting that once had a place (in the 90s) but is now completely obsolete.

  12. Dude, we're still in the '90's out here on the peninsula. Secondly, do you think you are getting a strait dose of the news in town right now. Do you think the PDN is giving the strait dope on what is happening? Do you think you can trust them to provide the information one needs to navigate the labyrinth of bullshit that goes down at city and county meetings? Frankly, KONP is the best source of daily news and they don't have pictures. PAPA is going to be a great addition. Grandparents who can't make it to the game will get to watch it at their own leisure. Can't make a county commission--no problem PAPA will cover it. Can't make a city council meeting--no problem PAPA is on it. Want to see in depth interviews with candidates running for office? PAPA will have them on the air and ask penetrating questions and get good answers. Working with a non-profit on a low budget? PAPA will provide the air time for worthy non-profits to get the word out about their mission and recruit support. The only thing that is "pretty sad" is people like you who sit on their ass and complain while other people are out there fighting the good fight.
    Pretty sad indeed.
