City Hall: The Buck Stopped Here, But THE BUCKS Never Stop Here

Wow! Sounds like the Port Angeles City Council had a sort of late-season disaster epic play out for them at their last meeting, courtesy of former Rep. Jim Buck. He came and laid out a truly frightening what if doomsday earthquake scenario for them. Or, to sum it up: BOO!!!

Here's the headline the PDN pulled from this "You're all gonna die!" Council meeting:

Port Angeles Council told of casualties, destruction of a massive quake

The headline does not seem to have captured the urgency and excitement of a presentation that centered on thousands and thousands of Clallam County residents dying in a massive earthquake.

Which is, of course, par for the course with the PDN. They have never really been known for accuracy, though it is an interesting case of them missing an opportunity to spread The Fear, which they so often prefer to do. But, this was a what if kind of thing. A hypothetical.

The PDN's "news coverage" continues to be as fuzzy
as this photo they printed of Jim Buck. Quality is Job None!

Or perhaps they were considering the messenger. Jim Buck's record as an elected representative leans way, way right. NARAL and the ACLU both rated him at 0% supportive. The Washington Sierra Club was able to generate a 20% supportive rating. But the Washington Conservative Union (the only union conservatives like, doncha know) gave good ol' Jim a 90% rating, while the NRA gave him a solid gold A+. Of course, the PDN also skews way, way conservative, so it's no surprise they gave Buck so much coverage, despite the lack of a screaming headline to match.

But an earthquake is a what if, something that could happen tomorrow, or could happen 100 years from now. Who knows for sure? However, one thing we do know for sure is that the same Port Angeles City Council is on a totally unsustainable financial path, one that has already become a slow-motion disaster.

So wouldn't you love to see a headline like this:

Port Angeles Council told of destruction, lives ruined by crushing debt and incompetent fiscal policies

And hey, aren't conservatives supposed to be the fiscally conservative politicians? So couldn't good ol' right-wing Jim Buck come back for an encore and tear into spendthrifts like (Republican) Cherie Kidd, (Republican) Pat Downie and (Republican) Dan Gase? Couldn't he? Shouldn't he?

And...No. Of course that won't happen, any more than the PDN will turn into an honest and accurate newspaper. The City will continue to spend beyond their means. Infrastructure will continue to crumble. Drugs and poverty and a pervasive sense of hopelessness will continue to ravage the community. And the PDN will continue to ignore it all. That special kind of Clallam County Quality will be maintained.

  1. The PDN can NEVER tell the truth of what is going on around here. It has to always twist "news" around to make Port Angeles look wonderful, great, generous and benevolent.

Remember, it is real estate, and real estate money that runs this town. And runs to County. It is the real estate industry that pays for the bulk of the ads in the PDN.

Most of the activities of local government involve real estate. Zoning, planning, development.

So, the PDN has to make the place look wonderful. Minimize talk about things like earthquakes. People don't want to buy houses that are going to be devastated.

  2. Speaking of bucks, there's another story of note in today's fishwrap. Bob Martin is (finally!!!) retiring from Clallam County. He's been there over twenty years, doing nothing but harm, all while drawing an inflated salary. You want to talk about bucks stopping, think about the over one million bucks that Bob Martin has been paid to be a stooge for all manner of bad ideas at Clallam County. One million dollars of your money, my money, all to pay a guy who knows and does nothing.

The article touts Martin's "involvement" in the Carlsborg sewer fiasco. Though not in those terms. Way back when, as many of you remember, the county brought in expert consultants to deal with the Carlsborg issue. They were, as consultants go, highly qualified. They came up with a lower risk, lower cost suggestion to deal with it.

But rather than go with plan "A" from their own expert consultants, the county chose to go with plan "B", as in, "do what Bob says". He's the one who said to pipe it to Sequim, over the river, etc. More complex, riskier, more expensive. All seemingly because know nothing Bob Martin said so.

It remains a (no pun intended) watershed moment in terms of Clallam County idiocy and incompetence. It's also completely inexplicable. Why the hell did Bob Martin have such authority? Even if he was fronting for others, the impression was still given that he made the decisions on this issue (and others), and that's a risky perception to allow.

But there it was. Bonehead Bob wandering the halls of the courthouse, coffee cup in hand, wasting time and drawing a fat salary, all while only occasionally being called upon to issue or prop up yet another bad idea coming down the pike. The Tweedle DUMB to Jim Jones' Tweedle Dee.

So good riddance Bob Martin, I wish we could get our money back. I also wish I could believe that you will be replaced by someone who knows what they're doing. I wish, but you won't. Tweedle DUMB mach 2 is undoubtedly all lined up.

    1. Bob Martin is responsible for the half million dollar Lange settlement by issuing an illegal building permit on land that was not supposed to be developed. This the county attorney's office tried to protect for 25 years until Lange finally hung in and won in court. Add another million in failed attorney fees to this mess and he alone cost taxpayers over one and a half million. Good bye and good riddance.

  3. Hey CK! But the BUCKS do keep coming to Port Angeles.

Look where virtually all the projects the City is spending all this money on is located. All downtown, along the waterfront.

All the projects that the City has indebted it's residents to, are guaranteed to be destroyed by the expected earthquake and tsunami.

That's called quality leadership. Quality planning by our professional staff.

Even within government, you would be hard pressed to find credible professionals not telling civic planners to locate new projects out of known hazard zones. Don't rebuild in flood zones. Build new critical infrastructure in areas not prone to anticipated or historic natural disasters.

But in Port Angeles, they put the most expensive project ever built right along the waterfront, on fill.

    They've built fake beaches.

    They've built a cement promenade.

They've built windmills right at the water's edge.

It's because Port Angeles is *special*, dontcha know.

    What? Me worry?

They don't see HOW it could possibly hurt every single other living person in Clallam County. They get theirs, so they are good.

And, the people who know about this are given some money, for some service, no matter how inflated in value or even if they fail to deliver --- to shut them up.

The thing is, these aren't masterminds. They're dumb clucks who swagger like they own the place, but in reality, it only takes a few people to stand up and speak up.

The county would be a whole lot better off with a lot of these boneheads behind bars, or bankrupt.

  4. The real story is at the Port.

They can't walk away from the CRTC and the commitment to take the recycled composite materials which were required as quid-pro-quo for all that State funding McAleer is so proud of having procured.

In addition she recently was quoted in the PDN that a significant property owner 140 acres) at Sequim Bay had put holdings up for sale. This is either false or she has disclosed confidential information.

Trouble brewing and McAleer is going to make Fluoride Issues pale in comparison.

  5. I cannot believe that the Port Angeles city council would come allow Jim Buck to lecture them on any topic.

Jim Buck is a zealot. He's a nut. He has no credibility whatsoever.

Which, now that I think about it, makes him seem like a perfect match for our city council, actually. I'm sure he has a stake the outcome of stoking this fear. Maybe he's gone into insurance, or is shilling emergency food buckets like Jim Bakker, or...? Whatever it is, it's hard to believe he's just doing this out of the goodness of his heart. Jim Buck has no heart.

And our council have no brains. So I don't expect Buck dire warnings to elicit much by way of a response. Like CK points out, the city is doing fine at crumbling all on its own. no earthquake required.

On September 19, 2016, I was hired by the Port of Port Angeles as its Director of Business Development. Shortly after being hired, Commissioner McAleer and Executive Director Karen Goschen asked me to meet with McAleer associate Fred McConkey to explore the purchase of his property at Highway 101 and Sequim Avenue. Ms. McAleer informed me it was her intention to liquidate the Port's John Wayne Marina and to use those funds to purchase Mr. McConkey's Sequim property. Also, part of my duties at the Port included the oversight of Port real estate and property managment, as well as, the Composites Recycling Technology Center. Within weeks of being hired by the Port, I learned of a financial discrepancy in the lease amount being charged to the CRTC of which could cause the Port to forfeit a more than $2,000,000.00 reimbursable grant.

Continued: Upon informing Executive Director Ms. Goschen and all three Port Commissioners, I was told to write a letter justifying the financial discrepancy and Commissioner Steve Burke suggested we "do a shell game with the money". I objected to anything other than 100% transparency with this issue which was met with extreme hostility. I subsequently reported this issue to the Ports Human Resources Manager Holly Hairell who in turn reported my objection to the Port's Director of Administration and Finance John Nutter who in turn informed Executive Director Karen Goschen. Within hours of my reporting the financial discrepancy regarding the CRTC lease, Ms. Goschen placed me on leave and ultimately dismissed me.

I objected to and reported what was clearly improper action by government employees and officials and was summarily dismissed. I believe it is vitally important the citizens of Clallam County be aware of how senior management and elected officials have overseen the publics assets, and I have first hand knowledge of what seemed to be gross negligence and potentially unlawful actives by them. For the sake of all Clallam County citizens, I sincerely hope wrongdoing at the Port is exposed and corrected once and for all. Sincerely, Daniel Binswanger

Been trying to tell you about McAleer but all you did was make fun of the misspelling of her last name. You should be all over the whistle blower who turns out to be the wolf in sheep's clothing.

    2. Hey Anon 5:52 Nice that you care.

Do read the header of this blog. Here, I'll make it easy for you: "Telling the truth about one of the worst, most corrupt places on Earth, and providing more information than the Peninsula Daily News could ever hope to."

So, yes, there is much that needs to be done, but we first have all the corruption and deceit this blog is committed to exposing to deal with.

Look at all those that HAVE tried to make Port Angeles a better place, and have been systematically run out of town. For years. You aiming to be next?

    3. Anonymous 10:38 PM is right on target. A natural tsunami is always a maybe thing. But the manmade wave of debt is a sure thing. The ability of local governing bodies to cope with either of them is seriously in doubt.

    4. These assholes have already planned how to profit on the earthquake, tsunami and recovery. wouldn't be surprised if one of the usual suspects has already cornered the market on bottled water after the shake out. "Never let a disaster go to waste."

    5. Calling them assholes would be a disservice to assholes everywhere.
They're nothing but criminal psychopaths who care nothing whatsoever about the city or the citizens..

  26. CK - the number of posts and looks/hits says the port is over-ripe (rotten) and while McAleer should take the brunt as being the longest there, you won't find much love for Connie or Steve.

Binswanger must have signed a severance agreement with restrictions on what he can say but the cat is out of the bag.

Know you're not a newspaper but thanks for giving the story some legs to run.

    1. I checked it, folks, and it's true!

Maybe Cherie is confused about what being "contemporary" means. Maybe she's trying to be bi-coastal?

    2. Maybe you need an entire section of this site devoted to Kidd?
