Some Die With Their Boots On...And Some Die With Their Hand Out

So, for those of you who haven't heard, Don Perry literally dropped dead yesterday - hopefully before he got to vote for Donald Trump. Anyway, there's a story about it that was just put up on the PDN's website, if you want more info than you're going to find here.

The thing that jumped out at me from the article, aside from the ridiculously large picture at the top of it, and Cherie Kidd's woefully misguided description of Don as "a visionary," was the fact that there's been a GoFundMe account set up to raise money to pay for Don's funeral, and to "help Don's family."

Now, call me old fashioned, but...Even if I was dead I'd be embarrassed by such a thing. This really strikes me as putting out a tin cup and begging for funeral funds, which, to me, is a private family responsibility. As for the "to help Don's family" part, again...It just seems unseemly to me.

Am I wrong here? Am I behind the times? Or is there still some dignity left in death?

He helped "save" the Port Angeles underground...
Now he'll be in Port Angeles, underground.
R.I.P. Don Perry.

  1. It seems very sad to me that a man who has given so much to Port Angeles has to have a "go fund me" by the family to pay for his funeral..I thought he was well appreciated by the business people in town for what he provided here. Is this how Cheri and others rewarded him?..let him live impoverished once he retired from his public service?

    1. Don's poverty and lack of success was entirely his own fault. He kept and paid rent on an office downtown for years, but never really, actually used it. He ran the underground tours for years, but never got it together to form a non-profit that could have helped preserve the sites, and have possibly created a paid job or two. He regularly, publicly, described himself as "the laziest member" of the city council. And on and on. Don's worst enemy was Don.

    2. But, didn't he just "SELL" his underground tours to the Black Ball? You'd think, since he owns property, etc etc., that the family could foot the bill and not resort to a go-fund-me.

Talk about a lack of planning.

And, for the record....I do not see Cherie's name on the go-fund-me list. Huh, words words words is all she spouts.

  2. Wow! This is a bit strange. Yes, I knew Don pretty well. We did a lot of things over the years. Yes, of course he was a bit of a buffoon. Yes, he was a right wing nut job. I never relied on him for, well, any thing.

Maybe that is what I'm pausing about. Wow. Don Perry has come and gone. And now they have a tin cup out for him, just to deal with whats' left.

    Gives a person pause.

    1. Why? Everyone dies. He was 71, and not in that great shape.
      Why is this a "pause".

  3. For perspective, let's remember that the only reason Don rates this much notice on his dying is that he was on the city council. And for perspective, let's remember that the only reason he was on the city council was that he defeated Peter Ripley in an election. Finally, let's also remember that the voters booted him off as soon as they could, when he was defeated by Sissi Bruch.

Maybe he was an affable guy in private, but as a public figure, he was far from able.

    1. wasn't he on the council during the Karen Rogers years?

  4. Seems he would have made some money when he sold his Heritage Tours to Blackball Lines, operator of the Coho Ferry. Let's be sure the family endorses this funding arrangement. This wouldn't be the first scam in the area, if it is a scam.

    1. Obviously alot of people use go-fund-me for personal bills. My preference is to give to those who don't stick their hand out in such a blatant expectant manner.

  5. Deputy Mayor Cherie Kidd and Perry were elected to the City Council at the same time, in 2007.

"Kidd said both were part of the Underground Foundation, which joined other community members, including Jackson Smart, whom Kidd said introduced Perry to the Underground, in preserving the landmark."
So the first thing Cherie has to do is try to take half credit for what he ostensibly did?? She has no shame.

Second, I agree that things like this should be kept to family. If you want to start a GoFundMe account or set up a bank account where donations can be made, fine, but share it only with those friends and family who ask. Better yet, start yopur own account NOW so when you die, you don't have to put your family through this.

  6. As someone who worked in city hall during the years Don Perry was on the council, I have to object to the people (on the PDN) saying "what a gentleman he was."

Don Perry was a tacky, borderline creepy lecher. He was always asking female staff members for hugs, commenting on their looks and bodies, and generally behaving in a boorish and totally unprofessional manner. How the city didn't get sued over his actions, I do not know.

Enough with the "gentleman" crap. He was a creep!

    3. Years ago, I sat in a room with Don, Cherie and a few other local "civic leaders". The blatantly racist anti- native garbage that came out of their mouths was astonishing.

In public, they smile and pretend, but in private, you get to see what they really think, and who they really are.

    2. The begging to bury him is the issue. $5000.00 to bury him?
Holy moly, like it's our responsibility to stick him in to the ground?
Most grieving families don't try and make a buck off their dead family member.

  8. Tacky in life, and tacky in death. That's Don Perry. Points for consistency, anyway.

  9. I believe you have a gofund me too. So what makes you ok to recieve help and not someone else. What are you doing to make this community a better place. Don was a good man with a huge heart. He helped my family out when we needed it with no questions asked. He loved and cared about everyone in his life. he put 100% into everything he did. Most of his good was volunteer work. No one is begging for help. We are a community that helps one another out when there are times of tragedy and losing Don was a tragedy.

    1. Ah yes...Another mysterious and ill-informed comment. I have a GoFundMe account? Really? Thanks for passing that along, because it's news to me.

Do tell...Just what is "my" GoFundMe account saying I need money for? That and any other details you could share with me about my own life would be very much appreciated!

    3. the GO FUND ME page, set up by Wendy Hemmert is begging for money for "the family". Did the family authorize this?
She's also solicited money for a van for some guy (his was stolen) and for what appears to be (a taken down campaign) for Our Town (?)
So, what the hell is going on?
Is this a scam? Looks like one.

  10. Let's hope that others speak just as "kindly" about you days after you pass away, as you do for others. I hope others "think" of how their words could come across callous and disrespectful to you grieving family. You don't have to like or respect the deceased, but you should respect their family during this time.

A "GoFundMe" is usually started by friends of the families. If you don't wish to help, simply ignore it and move on.

    Your comments give me pause.

What happened to self-respect, funeral pre-planning, and common sense.

  11. It could be useful to check the air pollution readings for particulate matter on the day Don died. Recalling testimony from opponents of the Nippon Biomass project, small particulates emitted into the air are said to increase the number of deaths due to heart attacks and strokes.
On a perhaps related note: Former council member Rich Headrick also died unexpectedly in a similar manner a few years ago. Coincidental, probably........

  14. So, Chelsea Ward has mounted a campaign to defend her Our Town vigilante group, and, as we know, the best defense is to try to smear the people who are saying less than favorable things about you. According to Chelsea, CK, you are actually a convicted pedophile who lives in Port Angeles.

Again, as we see, the members of this group don't need any proof to direct a campaign of destruction against.

Chelsea also tells her supporters (and, the way FB works, all THEIR friends) that Dale Wilson runs this blog, so she is asking her supporters to contact advertisers in the Port o Call, and tell them to pull their ads.

Yet again, they don't require any proof. Chelsea obviously visits this blog, as she referenced this thread about Don in her rant.

Chelsea (and those of her supporters she directed here), step back and see what you're doing in your efforts to defend you group. You're losing what ever credibility you might have once had. You and your group are helping to reinforce people's ideas and beliefs that Port Angeles is a crime ridden place to be avoided. The more noise you make, the more attention you bring to the dark side of Port Angeles.

And by todays' FB post, you make it easy to see why Port Angeles in how it is.

    1. Well, thanks for the tip, and, uh Chelsea...You're kind of way, way, WAY off base there. Sorry. Not even close.

But that might help explain why the number of pageviews this blog got today is triple the usual number - up well over a thousand! So, for that at least, thanks, Chelsea. You've done this blog a real favor, even if you are totally (and LITERALLY) wrong about everything you think you know.

    2. Hello? Chelsea? Others of her ilk? Do you see something going on here? How many people came here, today, to see how wonderful Port Angeles is, and what kind of people live here?

Maybe you should put a billboard up on the i-5 corridor. You know, one of those fancy electronic ones where you can change the message at will, on put up photos. That way, even more people will get to see what a rat-hole Port Angeles is.

The business community must just be loving you, right about now.

What is wrong with Port O Call having a convicted pedophile manage their website. Isn't that a work from home job and would not involve contact with minor children. The man is not in prison ...he has to eat. God forbid he be a homeless pedophile without a address so he can be monitored. Is she trying to get him fired from a work at home job?

    1. Exactly. What's the point but to tarnish Dale's record? She isn't suddenly doing it to keep anyone safe or provide justice. She's vengeful and obsessed. Also, I'm a friend of the said man you're talking about and I can attest that he isn't actually a pedophile, but was dealing with severe alcoholism, depression, and mental illness which lead to the behavior. He is nearly done with his probation and has never done anything like that since. I can understand it being an issue, but at least it was an at home job.
