Not at All...Honest

Usually, of course, the slimeballs and sleazebags of the world do everything they can to obscure their true intentions, their true nature. But every so often, something comes out unintentionally that really sums up and crystalizes what they're all about. Today offers a twofer in this department, courtesy of a recent City Council candidates debate:

Jake Oppelt, asking out loud if he has conflicts of interest, said, “not at all.”

He said he “is fully vested in the community,” pointing to ongoing projects such as renovation of the Lincoln Theater.

In politics, I have often found that when Politician A accuses Politician B of something, it's likely that it's really Politician A who is actually doing the deed in question. It's a pretty basic form of guilt displacement. The flip side to that is, when someone just spontaneously denies they're doing something, well, it's pretty much an admission.

"Is my photo upside down? Absolutely not!"

Thus, we have ambitious and ethically-challenged Jake Oppelt - he of the secret, mysterious moneyman partner(s), and proud bearer of numerous obvious conflicts of interest - taking the bull(shit) by the horns to declare that...He has no conflicts of interest.

Translation: Watch out!

The fact that this fact is then glossed over, ignored, unremarked upon in the Peninsula Daily News article about the debate tells you everything you need to know about their approach to news and the truth. It also probably tells you who they will be pulling for in the election.

Translation: Watch out!

  1. Donald Trump, TV addict today: "I have very little time for watching TV."

    Riiight.

  2. Watch out? For what, when it can't get any worse. Simpletons will simply keep the scams going (so long as the peasants think it's just entertainment).

  3. Twofer?! At least!

First, that poor excuse for a community news paper, the Peninsula Daily News once again demonstrates why it is disregarded by so many. Once again trying to manipulate the public with their skewed so-called "reporting" to do their part to keep the "powers that be" fully in control.

Every one I know has discontinued their subscriptions over the last couple of years.

Jake? Of course he should sit on the city council, and vote on projects that spend the public's money that will support and enhance his own projects. And those of his un-named moneyed partners. Conflict of interest? Who could honestly construe a problem with that?

    Port Angeles: Ethically challenged.

  4. Here's a question for Jake and all city council candidates: What will you do to stop the thugs in Our Town from terrorizing our town? What will you do to stomp out vigilantes in Port Angeles? How will you get the local police to respond to crimes committed by members of Our Town?

    1. Excellent question. Good luck with getting an answer to it.

    2. Come to the League of Women Voters tonight...I'll be GLAD to answer it.

    3. Marolee was the only candidate of the 6 tonight to suggest that with public input, the council develop a vision of what kind of place we want to be. Then everything else falls into place.

When she discussed high-tech issues (again, the sole advocate), Jake the OHole tried to plunder her thunder with an empty one-liner.

    4. Decide what kind of place we want Port Angeles to be? What a concept! And the public have input into that decision?

No wonder the powers-that-be don't want to see her elected.

  5. In the KONP interview, the candidates were asked if they had anything from their past.... The big O-hole said "no, nothing". A boldfaced lie. He's been arrested several times, unless we are to believe that he isn't ashamed of that, at all.

    2. It isn't about being ashamed, it IS about answering the questions truthfully, when running for public office!!!!!

  6. At the LWV candidate forum tonight at the courthouse, Mr. Oppelt had the unmitigated audacity to claim that Port Angeles was one of the best small towns in America! Does he not read this blog? Came across as as opportunistic bullshitter with his head in the sand. Just like you said, CK.

And Mr. French loves the EDC! Say no more!

So Position 2 isn't even close. Lee greatly outclassed his rivals.

    1. Thanks for the report from the forum. And as for Jake reading this blog...Can he read? If he can read, can he comprehend? Like you say, the word "opportunistic" comes to mind.

  8. With PA's 20K population (not including the homeless, of which 90% are from there (thanks Doc!)), it'll be interesting to see if the primary gets four figures of votes cast.

  9. Just got a ballot, and the crooks want another 0.2% local sales tax for a new "Transportation Benefit District". Like hell they will. First how about quit giving tax money away like candy. F@#&ing good ole boys! That's code for hardened white collar criminals. Stop the crime, then we'll talk about another dime.

  10. The fundamental attitude has to change, before anything meaningful in Port Angeles will. Look at the history of failures.

I mean, right from 100 years ago, when they built the world's largest sawmill in Port Angeles. Another example of forethought and planning? No, rape, plunder and pillage. The sawmill went out of business in something like 10 years because there wasn't enough wood left to run the business!

Now it's just grant whoring. Trump is cutting all the agencies, so their funds will dry up. So much for grant whoring.

Actual, long range planning for sustainability? In Port Angeles? Not at all... honest!

  11. Was thinking today, as I drove out to the recycling area at the landfill and drove by that project to move the garbage inland, what did that whole project cost, by the time they covered that mountain of garbage in AstroTurf?

Does any body know the real, final tally? Does anybody know how much the city actually spent on the first, failed attempt? In total, no hidden costs. No fudgin' the figures.

    Anybody out there know?

    ReplyDelete

    1. The first, failed attempt cost millions. Success (especially in Clallam County) would have to have cost even more. Are you also including the useless and failed sea wall as part of the project/costs?

      Delete
    2. Yes. Everything from engineering plans and permits. Oh, we do remember the city got dinged for working without the proper permits on the seawall part.

We often talk about the $50 million spent on Cutler's Turd Tank, the most expensive project in the city's history, but I think his failed seawall project, and the project that then had to be built to address his failures cost a pretty penny, in total.

I may be wrong, but I seem to remember the failed seawall ended up costing something around $12 million. And the second project to fix the first was way more than $20 million. But, it got muddy after they found all that asbestos, and the costs went up. I don't remember hearing a final total.

      Anybody out there know?

    3. Piling up a mountain of trash: priceless

The price tag was said to be in the $20 million dollar range (but that was to move it, too).

What is the old chestnut? Never enough time or money to do it right the first time, but there is always enough money and time to do it over again.

      Our city motto.

      Delete
    4. Yes, but, I think you're missing the point. The City spent tens of millions to deal with a big pile of trash, it's true. But at the of it all, the City still had a BIG PILE OF TRASH, and a BIG PILE OF DEBT. Don't you see? It's really almost like they doubled their money, or something. I'm SURE Cherie could explain it to you.

    5. Problem is, it really isn't funny.

    6. The city engineer back in the 1980's (Dave Flodstrom was city manager back then) personally told me that the landfill project did not have to happen that way. We told me the landfill seawall was designed to be shored up added to without the huge costs.
I asked him why didn't the city do that if they already had the foresight to design the landfill that way? He said because the city doesn't use their own highly paid staff engineers they always higher consultants to tell them otherwise. That way if the plan fails they can go after the consultants and blame them. That is one of the main reason's why he left the city back then because he and his staff were not allowed to their jobs that they were being paid for. He said once the city started taking state and federal monies everything changed. The stings that were attached were incredible. It added 20% or more to the cost of the projects.
The landfill repair on the seawall should have cost no more than $1M in his opinion.
      Hope that helps clarify things.

  12. I still think we should target every college on the west coast and blanket them with brochures of the state and national parks. Show young people cross country sking, hiking, water sking on lake cresent, maybe a few shots of obviously naked young adults in our natural hot springs smoking some pot! Seriously many of those kids have desposible incomes and it would be delightful if they spent their winter, spring and summer breaks spending that income here. Why enough of them showing uphere to purchase sking , hiking equipment and pot might even carry a small airline through the lean times when only city and county succupents can afford to fly back and forth from PA and Seattle.

    1. You mean, like these recreation areas that already do:

      http://www.visitchelancounty.com/

      https://www.birchbaywaterslides.net/

      https://www.greatwolf.com/grand-mound

      http://splashdownwaterpark.net/

      https://seattlegreatwheel.com/

The list of "Amusement parks, Seattle" is REALLY long.

Just because we live in a soul-less backwater doesn't mean everyone else does. If you look at what is going on, now, in other parts of the world, you'll see family recreation opportunities exist.

Not just the Port Angeles style of recreation, which is meth, crack, heroin, now lots of cannabis, and/or lots of alcohol. Also part of the fun is branding your children with hot metal, like cattle. And firing up heavy equipment to destroy stuff.

Driving through downtown with "White Power" in big letter across your windshield, and a confederate flag off the back of you raised truck passes for "fun" in Port Angeles.

If they are rich enough to fly out here to hike in nature, I'm sure they have lots of options of other things to consider. Hiking in a military weapons testing site lacks a certain appeal, for many. Ya know?

    2. No airline, big or small, is going to deal with the podunk Port now that the requisite airport funding has been siphoned off by the cronies. The Port thinks that some subsidy will get them off the hook, but it won't. Honest.

    3. I dont know about actually branding college students... maybe tattooing them would be profitable. But Im thinking The state and national parks offer up a little more vacation adventure and fun then a water park or an amusement park. There are three things most young adult absolutely love,Outdoor adventure, each other and pot. All three are insanely easy to market and merchandise. Lots of places with cottage industries that support those three things have been successful with a lot less to work with.

    4. None of this is new. Like somebody posted previously, it is real life "Ground Hog Day".

Collen McAleer can prance around with her I-5 cronies, and convince the local yokels to sign up for her latest con, but it is all been done before, here.

Anybody that is going to do ANYTHING serious, is going to do their requisite research on the conditions and history of the area. 'Nuff said. All the sweet talk and glowing manufactured reports are not going to erase the history, and track record. The "smart money" has, and will continue to steer clear of Port Angeles, and anything to do with it.

      Dems de facts, folks.

That being said why not support Jake and Travis who will certainly bring fresh ideas and the ability to stay awake during the tediousness of city council meetings?
