If You Don't Like Jim Jones, I Have Good News for You! Plus Updates!

It's too early to say whether or not this next election cycle will be "productive" for Clallam County, but it's clearly going to be an interesting one.

Reptiles can often be found basking on hot pavement...

I don't think I'm alone in saying that I think that one of the biggest problems at the County is Jim Jones. He's a slimy, reptilian bureaucrat who wants nothing more out of life than to keep his job, and does so by encouraging the worst impulses of those he works with and oversees. A dysfunctional County is one in which Jones can thrive.

...But a snake oil salesman should not be trusted any time, any place.

As an example: Remember back when the County's human resources director, Marge Upham, was leaving, and the County was looking to replace her? (Melissa Turner, who worked in HR, and who would have been a logical "next in line" to replace Upham, was suddenly and mysteriously fired at this time, too.) Remember how Mike Chapman and Jim Jones hatched a "solution" to filling that position that involved Chapman taking it himself? Only after this deal was done, and the County started spending money to train Chapman, he started to take some heat for the sleazy way he was chosen.

So Chapman stepped aside, and then Jim Jones personally handpicked Rich Sill to take the job - even though Sill had zero experience in HR, but did have baggage. In doing so, Jim Jones blew right past a County employee who had thrown their hat into the ring for the HR job. This employee has twenty years experience in human resources. Yes, twenty years - compared to the nothing that Rich Sill had. But Jones wouldn't even interview or talk to her, even though she made it clear she was interested in the position. Sexism and cronyism are all Jim Jones knows, so she was shut out completely and immediately.

That woman is Barbara Christensen, from the Superior Court Clerk's Office, and she has now thrown her hat into the ring for the Charter Review Commission. I would personally very much like her to be part of that process. Given her history with the County, and the insights afforded by her personal experience there, I think she'd bring a valuable perspective to the process. And it might give Jim Jones a headache or two.

Yes, this time it's personal. And not just with the Charter Review Commission. I look forward to seeing how the Republican vs. Republican smackdown between Bill Payne and Mark Nichols plays out in the Prosecuting Attorney's primary. Nichols, like Christensen (and so many others, frankly) got a raw deal and public screwing from the County, so I think we can all see why he might be motivated to run. My hope is that he comes armed with information that will reveal some of the inner workings and backroom dealings of the County. Obviously, Payne got off to a rough start with some of his "Oops!" heavy hiring, but we all know there's more going on there than that.

Mark Nichols. The possibilities for "bring the Payne" puns are limitless.

So good luck to Barbara Christensen, and to Mark Nichols. I can't wait to see who else - and what else - pops up before filing closes.

UPDATE: You heard it here first, and you're hearing it here first again.

As we told you a week ago, Bryon Monohon, Mayor of Forks, has signed up to run for County Commissioner. But he's signed up with No Party Preference. Good choice, Bryon! This will be interesting.

There's also another person signed up for the Charter Review Commission - this time it's Jerry Sinn of Sequim. On one hand he's the treasurer of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula. Who could object to that, right? On the other hand, the colorfully named Mr. Sinn is also the Chair of the Steering Committee for FourC - the Concerned Citizens of Clallam County, a group of far, far, far right-wing kooks who don't want you to have healthcare reform, but do want you to be afraid (ever so afraid!) of Agenda 21.

2nd UPDATE: It's official...

I don't think that Mike Doherty would be signing up to be on the Charter Review Commission if he were planning on running for County Commissioner again, so he is obviously out. Done.

Also signing up for the CRC...Port Angeles City Council member and fake progressive, Lee Whetham...Also representing the City of PA is Dennis McBride, who lives in Sequim, but works as the Equipment Services Division Manager for the City of PA...And sad sack former County Commissioner "candidate" Patti Morris, who didn't so much run for office as crawled, playing the role of spoiler as one of Matthew Randazzo's dirty tricks during the last Commissioner's race...

3rd UPDATE: One more slips in...

One more candidate for the Charter Review Commission slipped in today, and he's an interesting one. Don Corson is probably best known for being the co-owner of Camaraderie Cellars in Port Angeles. Interestingly enough, he and his partner (Gene Unger) also managed the recent redistricting of the County, with districts shifting in the direction of the West End to account for all the growth in Sequim since the last redistricting.

But the fact about Don Corson that stands out to me is that he retired in 2009 from his job as VP of Planning and Development at...Merrill & Ring. So, yes, yet another timber guy, even if he does make wine now.

With just one day left to file, the following people/positions are still unopposed: Hugh Haffner (PUD District 1); Rick Porter (Judge for District Court 1); Kevin Van De Wege (State Representative Position 1); and Bill Benedict (Sheriff). The race for Prosecuting Attorney has two Republicans, of course, but would be even livelier with another perspective added.

  1. Jim Jones sets an example at the county - a bad example. Under his watch, we've endured numerous questionable firings, questionable hirings, employee lawsuits, and so on. I know that these things can happen anywhere, but we do seem to get more than our fair share. And bad begets bad: Nichols gets told he's going to be prosecuting attorney, but gets tossed aside for Payne. Payne then hires a buddy who, oh, just was accused of sexual harassment - and leaves. The dysfunction breeds more dysfunction. Even the race between Payne and Nichols is part of that now, and we get to pay for the election so they can work it out - just like we get to pay for all the other unprofessional and underhanded BS that Jones allows to happen.

This is what passes for leadership in Clallam County. No wonder we're a mess.

    1. Yes. And we can all thank his fellow Liberal Democrats, commissioner Doherty and former commissioner (now representative) Tharinger for putting him in charge.

    2. If you're saying that Jim Jones is a "liberal Democrat," you've been smoking something stronger than medical marijuana.

      Delete
    3. Well... Now the three of you have established how little you know about the State and Local Democratic Party. Until he went into government work back in the 90's, Jones was the Democratic Party PCO in my precinct for many years and was a delegate to at least two Washington State Democratic Conventions.

    4. Anonymous 8:34 AM: First of all, the original poster doesn't even mention party affiliation, so...

As for your comments...As an example, Steve Tharinger is a registered Democrat and an elected Democratic representative - but he has also led attacks against other Democrats. So what is your point?

In Clallam Count, your party membership counts a lot less than your actions - and Jim Jones has time and time again taken extremely conservative actions, and demonstrated poor leadership. Which again, makes his party affiliation irrelevant. So what's your point?

    5. Jim Jones holds a job that is not an elected position. He (in theory) responds to the wishes and direction of the county commissioners. Two of the three of those commissioners have been conservative Republicans for many years. So Jim Jones, whatever his personal views supposedly are, will go with the flow and continue to implement conservative policies and push back against them not one little bit.

  2. It should be interesting to see how the endorsements shake out in the Payne/Nichols race - assuming no one else from the right jumps in to confuse things even more.

    1. I can't wait for the debates. Those also hold potential for being very interesting.

  3. Jim Jones, despite his dismal record of fiscal solvency prior to becoming county administrator, has always presented himself as the budget guy. "We're one of only two counties that are debt-free blah blah blah." So long as he could boast about the budget being "sound," he clearly didn't concern himself with whatever else was going on (or going wrong) at the county.

Now that the budget is not the shining star it once was, and, yes, the cumulative effect of all those other problems are starting to manifest in more visible ways, I wouldn't be surprised if he decided to step down in the near future.

I say step down, not retire, because no one here actually goes away. Dan Maguire dug a deep financial hole at the YMCA, then "retired." Now he's running the Juan de Fuca Festival. Tim Smith "retired" from the city, but came back recently. As has been discussed here previously, Glenn Cutler has TWO retirements (the Navy and the city) but is out trolling for work. I suspect Jim Jones would follow this model as well.

Which illustrates a larger problem we face here. How do new ideas and new people get a footing here when the old white guys who've run things forever will never go away?

    1. So, that's why the Juan de Fuca festival seems to have been stuck in "boring" for the last half dozen years? And, it should be so much more than what it is, but I gave up going. Same tired merchants arranged in the exact same, unremarkable or interesting order. Same "exciting" music, only, the same the same the same. It hasn't grown. It has no vision. It's boring.
I see now. A tired old, uninteresting old white guy running things. Thanks for the perspective.

    2. JFFA has been stuck for years. Dan didn't necessarily create the problem, but he has made it worse. If you've been once, you never need to go again.

  4. IF Payne gets ousted by Nichols.

IF Sissi Bruch gets elected County Commissioner.

    IF Jim Jones retires.

IF Rick Porter doesn't get re-elected.

IF Sheila Wreck Miller doesn't get re-elected.

IF the Charter Review process doesn't get hijacked by Republicans.

IF all those things were to happen, then Clallam County might see some change. Might.

How many of these IFS do you think will really happen?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Maybe it's not too bad if none of these IFS really happen? Clallam County has done pretty darned well these past 12 years or so, they have not burdened their citizens with mountains of debt, have lived within their means by reducing staff and cutting overhead instead of asking for levy lifts and have managed the public's business like the only adults in the room.

    2. Previous to CK and Unearthed, I had no possible way to look at the candidates with any perspective. Since no one in this town is very forthcoming with information, I could only get a few people mumbling hushed whispers. I had no website I could go to, and just read, and get some idea WHO I would vote for. I'd just vote out incumbents, as that seemed to be the most prudent strategy. But I didn't have any real way to know if this was good, or not. The "debates" never had any good questions, and it was like softball being played with the pitcher saying "hold your bat out and I'll hit it".

    3. I'll wait to comment on the individual races until after the filing period is closed, but I did want to say that I also appreciate the updates and info you're bringing to the table, CK. I'm sure there are some who don't appreciate it at all, though..:)

    4. Be careful about saying that Clallam County has not burdened their citizens with mountains of debt. Instead they continue to punish their employees through furlough days for two years, then 37.5 hour work weeks, and now they're trying to pass a 36 hour work week and the unions are completely ineffective, saying the news media doesn't like them so won't work with them, or just bending and saying there's nothing they can do about it. Why is this NEVER in the papers? Even some union stewards said they liked the time off (furloughs). I'm sorry - take your own PTO if you want a day off. Any County employee is effective paying double their property taxes. The County is too chicken to spread the burden across ALL the county taxpayers, choosing instead to punish their own. If there were any decent other employment opportunities, the County would be losing staff left and right.

  5. The electoral process only gets "hijacked" when people are apathetic, are convinced to give up, and don't participate.

You know, like :" Why bother, the system is rigged against us, anyways." Or, " It's hopeless, why bother?".

    Right?

  6. Well, unless things change dramatically, I think it's goodbye Commissioner Doherty, and hello Commissioner Peach.

    Three Republicans. Just great.

  7. Ah, so it's Bryon Monohon who's going to be the spoiler for the Democrats this time around.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. When the whole doggie deathcamp thing was exploding in Forks, Bryon Monohon got a fairly nakedly threatening letter from Steve Markwell's enabler, Matthew Randazzo. The letter essentially told Bryon to back off or risk damaging their mutual political interests. Perhaps now we'll find out what that meant.

    2. Assuming that Sissi is indeed serious about running for County Commissioner (and that's a huge assumption), she should resign from the City Council and commit herself to the County Commissioner race.

I'll be supporting Bryon in the primary and, hopefully, the general election as I don't trust Sissi and her "yes sir, yes sir" voting record.

      Delete
    3. And now we learn that Steve Markwell is back in Forks, apparently for the duration. Given his checkered past, his being in Forks, his connection to the sleazy Matthew Randazzo, and the fact that Bryon was threatened by Randazzo and Sissi was screwed over and ripped off by Randazzo....well, let's just say this should be an interesting race. LOTS to talk about, that's for sure!

  8. Funny Mr. Crypt Kicker, you won't post my comments, why? Because I stated your slimy attack on Jim Jones is pathetic or because I defended Mr. Jones? Typical liberal move, run and hide behind your censorship.

    1. One: You don't know what sex I am.

Two: If I won't post your comments, how come I'm posting AND responding to this now? If you're feeling persecuted or paranoid, I'm sorry, but that's not my problem.

Three: Censorship? See comment #2 above.

Finally, as a wrap up to all of this, let me restate for the record that Jim Jones is a cold, lying reptilian bureaucrat who should not be trusted. That is my opinion. His wife and/or mother may feel differently.

    2. CK doesn't post all the comments. He hasn't posted some of mine...it's fine. I don't really care. He has a standard for his blog. That is rare, and it's refreshing, and yeah, I do cross the line, occasionally. That's what a good editor does. Quit being a whiny little b*tch, and think it is all about you.

  9. So I see that Sissi did indeed vote to spend a HUGE amount of money the city doesn't have to move a bunch of garbage from the bluff to...not quite so close to the bluff, thereby not solving the problem, but rather delaying/extending it indefinitely. AND she voted (with everyone else, of course) to allow Dan McKeen to spend "only" $200,000 at a pop without Council approval. What a crock!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hmmm...Now, how many times do I have to spend $200,000 before I hit $1,900,000? Hmmm...Now, how can I maximize that discretion? Hmmm...

    2. And this why I'm not going to vote for Sissi. Her voting record is abysmal.

  10. I'm seeing a pattern developing from the defenders of the staus quo. They're quick to accuse critics of lying, misrepresentation of the facts, distortions, hate mongering and such. But, when challenged to show where this is actually happening, they fade away, or come up with really lame responses.

    Hmmmm.

    1. Welcome our special little corner of the world. They will also get really PERSONAL, fast, and try and make some catty little remarks, way below the belt. They're also fond of calling people names and hounding them (as they did Max). It's a chicken-shit little game. The more we can laugh at them, and ignore them like the big, puffed up, bully in grammar school, the sooner we can get this county on track.
