File Under: Shocking News (Simply Shocking)

Wow. I could NEVER have seen this one coming...

Entrepreneur tells of delays in rehabilitating Lincoln Theater

Jake Oppelt: The Donald Trump of Port Angeles!

  1. He needs to wait long enough to get on city council so the taxpayers can fix up his buildings. That is how it's done here.

  2. well at least jake has a new business model for port angeles success. charge higher prices than seattle. just saw david lindley (if you dont know look him up) for $30 at wheeler theater port townsend. and rainshadow recording there does $15 concerts small venue, perfect sound. while mr. oppelt's vission may exceed his grasp, perhaps he should take page from trumpworld and get in bed with russians financially. who else can afford prices he is projecting for his hotel and concert hall? not the under employed and unemployed majority of port angeles citizenry...

  3. It is such a mystery, dontcha know?

I mean, look around at the success story that is Port Angeles! Why wouldn't rehabilitating the old nothing-special-former-movie-theater be a great and successful venture, HERE?

I'm sure there are wonderful examples of places where old, really cool theaters were restored, and are now great facets of the local cultural life.

Here? First problem: "cultural life". Or, maybe we can just shorten it down to "culture". I'll guess what passes for culture to the rape, pillage and plunder crowd is a keg of beer and friends watching fake "wrestling".

Oh, well, we all know why the Lincoln is a stupid idea.

Except for a lot of people in Port Angeles.

  4. Considering how the poured cement walls that make up the theater are lacking rebar, and are not one pour (but layers) and this has ZERO seismic stability; and, considering how the fire exits go out to a covered walk-way (not to code); and, not to mention how the bathrooms were not, in any way, ADA compliant (really? down a steep, narrow, not to code winding staircase? What a shock); and, considering how the electrical was not AT ALL to code; and, how the upper seating area lacked any fire egress, at all; and, how the overall building has been scrubbed of any and all charming original features (hello, EBAY!) ...yeah, I guess there are a few delays.

I think the man is HIGH if he thinks he can: a.) run for city council and have any credibility at all, and, b.) have his finger up so many pie-holes at once.

I will wager that it will take 2 years, and lots of silent partner bucks, to get that ailing theater into any shape at all.

    1. And then what? Even if it opens, does it last any longer than his former "Get-your-Next-Door-Gastropub-hats-and-mugs" shop he opened a while back? Will there be enough morons in this area to patronize his "restored" Lincoln?

      Delete
    2. Next Door hats and mugs is selling Lefties nonsense, now, like anyone in this county wants to claim to be a "lefty".

    3. I can't see him booking the place more than 1 weekend a month, at the most. He is not a booker, has never been one, and I'm sure his rolodex is quite thin on that regard.

Plus, really major bands and artists want to see a union shop -- in fact, it's a requirement for many of their label contracts.

Do we even have a IATSE up here?

It isn't like the old movies..."lets find a barn and put on a show"....

    4. You would also need to have a contract with a hefty guarantee for any performer to make the trek out to Port Angeles. (Let's face it, PA isn't "on the way" to anywhere, except maybe Forks - and no one is going to Forks.) A couple big up front guarantees paid out, with a "crowd" of 10 or 12 people in the place, and word will get out to performers, and finances will get tight at for Jake and his Mystery Investors.

Gimme a break. His stated vision is just ridiculous. Not even a remote possibility.

    5. Keep a keen eye on the city of port angeles economic development director. He has to issue the building permits for any work done on the Lincoln. Also, keep in mind that concrete holding the place up was mixed with beach sand. That place will crumble like a stack of cards at the first slight tremor. Do you want to be trapped in there?

      Delete
  5. Does he really think the model of speading yourself too thin would also be good for the city? As if the city isn't spread thin enough already?
Let him do as he wishes with his own sources of funds, but he's a fake candidate if there ever was one. It's so transparent that all he wants is access to YOUR money for his personal projects.

    1. Yes, but he wants YOUR money to fix up his theater to charge YOU higher than market prices for events...Why can't you see how generous that is of Jake?

      Delete
    2. And, only bring bands that he wants to hear.
Sort of like selling beer to his buddies, while charging too much for the locals to view an already exploited, travel-ball collegiate "league".
His interests are in sanitizing the money of his investors, and in being B.M.O.C.

(for those of you unfamiliar: bmoc=big man on campus)

  6. Trying to parlay one small success into a would-be business empire, getting involved with wildly unrealistic projects (without investing his own money) and then trying to grab onto some political power as well...it's sad and scary that it's not an impossible analogy. Be sure to vote everyone...against Jake!

    1. Jake the snake! He doesn't belong on the council. Pure and simple, it is clearly a "lark". and how in the hell does he have time to run for council?
Will this be a repeat of his president of the downtown association?
He already can't be bothered to sit through a whole city council meeting.

      Delete
    2. a business empire where no one knows his unnamed investors. Doesn't that give you the warm and fuzzies. The thought of a councilman receiving untold buttloads of money from unknown, unnamed sources. Voting on contracts that may, or may not, benefit said unnamed sources. He's a regular Karen Rogers, isn't he?

  7. Please note who is in two of the three pictures with budding young sleazeball Jake Oppelt. It's well-established right-wing sleazeball Kaj Ahlburg.

His presence there can't be a good sign.

  8. Wish I would have screen shot the roster the night Jake ended up in the Clallam County Jail for stealing beer and being in possession of cocaine.

    1. Well, you might do a little roster search, or just a plain old search search for that one...Archives, anyone?

    2. John Nutter was the arresting Officer. Rumor has that he was not happy that both crimes were thrown out on a technicality. Apparently, when Jake got busted for stealing beer from the Texaco at 1st % Lincoln - the arrest lead to a search of his personal body - where cocaine was found. There was no probable cause to search and find the cocaine, in other words, the arrest wasn't going to stick. The Police Dept decided to drop both arrests as a result. This happened several years ago. John Nutter left the Police Dept shortly after this incident. Where is Paul Gottlieb when you need him?

    3. Lee and supporters are out in full force.

      There is much to fear.

Jake is young, intelligent, enthusiastic supporter of his home-town of Port Angeles.

So the theater is delayed – it is private money not public.

      Delete
    4. Any search of a person, attendant to arrest, is allowed. Otherwise we would put people in jail with weapons--or drugs. There has to be more to it than this. I would suggest old timey cronyism. The cops and the robbers know each other well here.

      Delete
    5. Gosh NO....we aren't supporters of Lee, we're just able to see the total and utter bullsh*t that is being passed off as "intelligent, enthusiastic supporter".

Sure, let him run a bar, and play at the theater, but don't let him on the council. WE don't KNOW who his supporters are, or what strings make that puppet dance.

    6. What is it with the minions of questionable people, who cannot for the life of them cite a fact in support of their opinions?

It's not so much that PA has smarmy and/or criminal characters afoot, but here they seem to so easily gain blind allegiance from village idiots.

      Delete
    7. Right. What we look for in a City Council candidate is good judgement, among other things. 5 year old kids can be intelligent and enthusiastic, but that doesn't mean they can make the decisions to run the city well.

Jake has demonstrated his decision making abilities. Willing to pursue the same kinds of policies that has gotten the city into so much debt.

      Delete
    8. Yes, Jake is young, intelligent, and enthusiastic. But lets not be naïve here - he is first and foremost self-serving. And he has a record of going after people and businesses that he perceives as competition. He can be vindictive. These are not attributes of someone who cares about his hometown. When you have a multi-prong substance abuse problem, you're not always thinking clearly.

    9. Do you think more tired ideas from baby-boomers like Lee and Margolee are the answer?

Get back to the old-croaks home you screwed everything up beyond compare.

      Delete
    10. No, Anonymous 6:58 PM, the answer is obviously to have brilliant people like you, who mangle names (or don't even know them in the first place) in charge of things. I mean, who cares about details, right?

      Delete
    11. We'd be much better off with young blood than old cronies. Sure, there's a few snowlfakes, but you can't just arrogantly write off an entire generation.

"Tired ideas"? Sounds more like the current council, eh? Oh snap, they have NO ideas!

      Delete
    12. Yes Lindsey is a terrific choice. Travis, maybe. Jake NO!! You'd do much better with Lee (who has proven himself) and Marolee who gives a shit, and has paid attention to what is going on.

You want a balance, just not a bunch of newbies who are only doing to for their egos. We've had enough EGOS (Hello Cherie, Danny.) We've had enough Yes Men (Hey Brad). And, we'd had enough old men (Oh Poor Pat).

      Delete
    13. Just because Jake is "young" does not mean he or his approaches to doing things in Port Angeles is any different than " the old croaks". There are plenty of young folk in this town who are as regressive as their parents. We see the raised 4 wheelers with the confederate flags flying, and "white power" decals on their windshields driving around town, every day.

Unlike you, I'm not going to support a candidate simply because of their age, or the "generation" they supposedly are part of. I'm interested in what they have done and said. What they have demonstrated by action.

  9. Speaking of news, and of the PDN, it was interesting to see the lack of coverage by the PDN of the amazing Port Angeles children who were nominated for that EMMY!

The PDN can have glowing headlines about how the baseball team loses two games in a row, but doesn't find the history making efforts of our local children important enough to share with it's readership.

    Does any body wonder why?

    Typical Port Angeles.

    1. Yes, it DOES say a lot, doesn't it?

Dale Wilson, you civic menace! Don't you know Emmy awards are a gateway drug? Next they'll be wanting a Tony, then a Grammy...And the downward spiral is spiraling!

  12. Oh Lord....In the comments on the PDN there are people who think the Lincoln Theater will be a success if they "remember all the Twilight fans out there!"

Because that is just SO current, right? Like there aren't a million "Twilight" DVDs that have been dumped at Goodwill.

Why be ahead of the curve when you're so good at being behind it? Sigh....
