Today,
officially, is the deadline for Light Up the Lincoln, Scott Nagel and Karen
Powell's effort to raise $235,000 to buy the shuttered Lincoln Theater and turn
it into a nonprofit performing arts center.
“We
should have a special announcement next week. We're working on a major deal” —
one about which Nagel didn't elaborate.
Nagel
is optimistic, and added that more than 20 people have pledged at the $1,000
level, though he declined to give the donation tally so far.
Sigh...Yes, yes, Scott....We know. Magic Beans will be available at the snack bar. Sure, Scott.

I think the key line from this latest article is "declined to give." As in, that's what most people have done, which is why Nagel "declined to give" any figures.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe the PDN is promoting this scam. Well, I guess I can since they promoted Port Angeles United, Revitalize PA, and all the latest hucksterism going on in the city. If there was a charge of aiding and abeding chicanery PDN would be in the dock regularly. Of course PDN is the prime sponsor of the crab fest so I guess this partnership goes back a ways.

ReplyDeleteThe "big announcement? "Big Basin has given us another extension in time to raise the money". So what. If you couldn't raise the money by now, with all the free publicity John Brewer ( and CK!!) has given this, they really need to face reality.
You know, something along the lines of: "The City beat you to it, Scott. They have taxed people so much that even the City now openly says the public can't afford any more taxes. People can't afford their own utility bills. How do you think people are going to afford the millions it is going to take to buy, refurbish, pay salaries and run that building."
Interesting to see that the articles now have quotes from Scott and his wife that include " If we don't raise the money, it means not enough people said yes".
Get a clue.

DeleteSo, the PDN article directs you to the Revitalize Port Angeles page. On that website, you can click to see what the Lincoln Theater people have to say. There's a big video from when one of the TWILIGHT movies played at the Lincoln years ago to try and show you how "exciting" "show business" can be, I guess.
ReplyDeleteThe TWILIGHT trend is dead and gone. A huge majority of small town theaters are gone. The Lincoln Theater is gone. None of them are coming back. Markets have changed, audiences have moved on.
But, as always, Port Angeles clings to the past with a death grip.
Breaking News: The Juan De Fuca Festival has handed their checkbook over to Scott Nagel to buy the Lincoln Theater!

Which leads me to believe that the big reveal that Nagel is teasing is simply going to be another extension of the timeline to raise the money, which, presumably, is not exactly flowing in.
Do contributors get a refund if the goal is not met or is this crowdsourcing without refunds?

DeleteWhat are all you Sad Sacks and Downer Debbies going to say when Scott pulls this off? It seems like some of you a HOPING he doesn't succeed - which is truly sad. Yes, we have some fruitcake and out of touch leaders that need to be singled out, along with a business community that doesn't know how to work towards a common goal - but the Lincoln is different. Don't underestimate the good will of this community. The Lincoln will happen. It may not happen today, but it will happen. And it will be an asset to downtown and Port Angeles. In spite of the nay sayers. I hope I don't rub some of you folks the wrong way by saying something positive and hopeful. There are a few of us out there . . . and we have a very good grasp of the reality in Port Angeles. We see the same the problems, but our response of much different,
ReplyDeletePlease feel free to enlighten those reading here as to how you see this "happening." It would be good to hear from the other side on this, because, frankly, it sure seems like a complete fantasy to me. But please, take a shot at showing me I'm wrong.

DeleteI attended a "Revitalize" meeting a while back. when Scott gave his pitch. The spiel was that the Lincoln would be "turning a profit in three years". Then, at that meeting, not one single number for rebuilding, insurance, staffing, etc was offered.
So, I'd love to hear how it is going work.
It would appear that someone has drunk deeply of the Revitalize Kool Aid!
